Firstly, let’s be honest… They could poop in a cup, film said cup for 2 hours in 3d, call it a Star Wars sequel, and it would make every bit as much money.
The movie is completely bland and a blatant ripoff of the previous films. Seriously. The main plot threat is once against a giant ball that destroys planets with a super laser beam.
It’s both sexist and racist imo. The poor black guy is comic relief, and of course wounded into a coma by the end of the movie, and essentially the main character’s emotional and physical punching bag. Seemingly happy to do her bidding at the risk of his own life for no apparent reason.
Of course he’s required to fall in “love” (in true Disney style) with her, and dutifully does.
Her character on the other hand is a blatant and way over the top effort to pander to feminists in a misguided attempt to apologize for slave Leia, despite the fact of course that “slave” Leia literally strangled her oppressor to death with her own chains in what might well be the most powerful and well known feminist uprising scene in all of the fantasy film genre.
Why do I say pandering? Because the main character is like that kid in make believe sessions that cries if you don’t let them be everything and win everything.
She’s the secret important relative, she’s the prettiest one, she’s the center of all attention, she’s the ninja, she’s the brilliant tech, she’s the savvy smuggler scavenger, she’s the super pilot, she’s the most self reliant, she’s the most competent at whatever she’s doing at the time, she’s the purest heart, she’s got the thicket plot armor, she’s the budding force messiah, she’s the most loved, and on and on and on.
Watching her is like watching someone play a lara croft with all the cheat codes turned on. There is zero tension. I’m reminded of a line from lawn mower man… “I am GOD here.”
And then there’s the cameos, which as far as I can tell are Chewy, Han, Leia, and Luke. Chewy is of course interchangeable. He’s completely unchanged. Han is older, and has been turned into a total incompetent and apparently tragic father figure. Leia’s role is wildly boring and can apparently barely move her own mouth muscles anymore presumably due to surgery. And Luke literally says not one word, takes not one step, and doesn’t even change his facial expression.
The entire plot is obvious from the beginning. Plot armor for everyone!
We even have a wise old tiny alien because we all miss Yoda. (Of course female now because boys are awful, am I right?) And a cute little robot that speaks in bleeps and whistles that of course the main character understands. (Making the token black guy comment on this fact like it’s a joke doesn’t make it any better.)
But I did enjoy watching the movie because I saw it in the theater and it was completely beautiful in 3d. If you just tune out the cloned carcass of a plot and think of it like a 2 hour moving painting it’s way way better.
It’s a Starwars toy infomercial funded by Disney, of course the production values are going to be staggering. And they are.

You are an Adult. Its a kids film, so was the original, the one you loved as a child, yes kids films sometimes contain plot holes, the story sometimes goes into fantastical territory, its a god dam fantasy, its not real it was not written for adults to break apart and critique for rational reality. Its a made up fantasy about a made up world….they use light sabers for gods sake in a society that has energy weapons, no it doesnt make sense it doesnt need to its just a bit of fun. Children can suspend disbelief and just enjoy a good adventure regardless of the ‘problems’ you as an adult see thats because you are looking at this as if it were real and possable instead of realizing Its just a fantastical children s adventure stop taking it seriously. Star Wars was just a kids film not a big part of your life you were not involved you just watched it and played with toys when you were a kid. No adult experience will have that same impact, thats just life you grew up and lost some of the ability to suspend your disbelief. The ide3a its racist is simply asinine it makes no comment about the races it portrays, thats again just you placing your adult ideas on what is just a fantasy story where skin color is irrelevant. Its not a part of the movie their skin color does not reflect6 their abilities or even their culture there is no comment on race in the film thats all in your head and itsan asinine idea. Its just a fantasy film a bit of fun a few hours of entertainment , not meant to be realistic or a comment on humanity or race its simply an adventure story that has characters whos skin color makes them judgeworthy in your mind. Its totally irrelevant what color their skin is they are not even Human its not even set in our galaxy, its a long time ago in a galaxy far far away its not about racism its an adventure about robots and the force and aliens and space battles, anything else you read into it is just misunderstanding what adventures and adventure movies are all about
Firstly, gah, wall of text much?
Secondly, Wall-e was a kid’s film too and it was an order of magnitude better. And don’t even get me started on Miyazaki’s work which while also aimed at children has incredible depth. How about the Incredibles? The things I am complaining about are not intrinsic to children’s films.
Thirdly, I don’t think kids collectively have 1.5 billion dollars to see movies. When I went and saw this there were 4 kids in the room, the rest were adults. Star wars is very obviously well beyond a kid’s thing now.
And Star Wars from the very beginning has been a ripoff of a very adult franchise.

I know exactly what an adventure movie is all about and I know that children’s movies all try to teach lessons. If anything in that regard here I’m just saying the lessons are repugnant.
I mean if I’m a kid and I see this, my take away if I’m a girl is that if I’m not good at EVERYTHING I must suck somehow, and if I’m a boy my job is to basically ignore pain and death in a quest to keep up with the nearest omnipotent goddess super model.
Shit, if this is a kid’s movie it’s 1000 times the worse for it.
No children dont need to have only the best role models in movies and yes Star wars is a kids film, The argument its somehow complex is asinine, its black and white the characters are cute robots and the humans have no depth at all. Star wars is an uncomplicated children s film , it doesnt attempt to be anything else . Just because adults like to pretend its complex or has depth it doesnt its a simple childrens adventure, good guys in white bad guys in black its simplistic its written for children its not teaching anything its an adventure story its not racist the races are irrelevant thats an adult idea but the races are not used to reflect any qualities at all they are irrelevant totally irrelevant we dont even know what race the characters are we only know what their skin looks like.
its not sexist just because the main female character is strong and able, you are being ridiculous, its just a character and yes most protagonists are ‘special’ personalities thats what makes for a good film. Rambo would be boring if rambo was not a super soldier, if you dont understand that you miss the point of story telling. Telling the story of an average person is boring we want the story of the champions the best of the best the story is interesting because she is not just a normal girl if she was there would be no interest in her story. Im sorry but if you cant even see Star Wars is a childrens film, rated for children watched by children then you miss the point, yes we who watched the film as kids are now adults and we still like the world that we saw back then so we stioll hold an interest but it was made for children we were children and thats why we enjoyed it. Its not rated r its not a complex story you want it to be but its a kids film a fantasy.
“its black and white the characters are cute robots and the humans have no depth at all”
That doesn’t make it a children’s movie, that makes it a crappy movie. Again, Look at the examples I already offered of children’s movies that are in fact very well made.
“its not sexist just because the main female character is strong and able”
Fortunately that’s not the argument I made. I have no problem with strong female characters. But she’s not essentially one character, that’s the problem, she has the assets of like 12 different lead characters. If she were in a game the game wouldn’t be any fun because she’d steam roll all the content.
“Rambo would be boring if rambo was not a super soldier”
True but Rambo isn’t awesome at everything. He’s just the best for his context. The whole point of Rambo is that he’s a tragic specialist. He can’t do anything but solider.
“if you cant even see Star Wars is a childrens film, rated for children watched by children then you miss the point”
And if you can’t see that the label “children’s” doesn’t excuse shitty film making then you disrespect children and film making. /shrugs
